About Bishop FM
Bishop FM is a brand new community radio station for South West Durham.
In November 2009 we commenced broadcasting on FM throughout Bishop Auckland, Crook and villages in between. The station is staffed entirely by volunteers, and is accountable to its audience.
Bishop FM will feature local news, sport and a variety of speech and music programmes.
Community radio is the ‘third teir’ of radio in the UK, under the BBC and commercial radio. Stations are run as small scale, not-for-profit organisations and operate for the benefit of the community they cover.
Bishop FM started in March 2007, and first went on air with a trial broadcast in October 2007. Shortly before the trial broadcast Ofcom announced that the station had been successful in its bid for a five year licence in South West Durham. Since then the station has streamed programmes online, and more recently has been working on the full-time FM launch.
