Wednesday, 2nd September, 2015 - 6:30pm

Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland

This lecture will outline the history of nuns and convents, utilizing the until recently neglected archives of their successors in England. It will tell their story, from links to those executed for their faith in England, to contact with supporters of the Stuarts both during the Civil War and the Jacobite risings. The second part of the lecture will explore the material culture of these female foundations in exile, from church decoration to the vestments used. 6.30pm start in the Long Dining Room, followed by a drinks reception in our Throne Room. Tickets for the lecture cost £6 and must be paid for in advance at Visitor Reception, or by calling 01388 743750.
