The True Story of the French Belle Époque

Monday, 24th October, 2016 - 6:00pm

The Bowes Museum, Newgate, Barnard Castle, Co Durham. DL12 8NP

Join Prof Dominique Kalifa to learn about the ‘˜Belle Epoque’. In France, the popular use of the term conjures up images of peace and prosperity, of Paris as Europe’s cultural and intellectual centre, of joie de vivre. How accurate, though, is this idea of a ‘beautiful era’? In this talk Professor Dominique Kalifa (Universite Paris 1, Pantheon-Sorbonne) will address this question, revealing the ‘true story’ of the ‘Belle Epoque’ in late 19th and early 20th-century France, exploring how this period has been remembered in French life and culture.
