An Illustrated Lecture Concert, by Professor Stephen Martin. In the 1850's Auckland Flower Show had become the largest ever musical event in British history. Newspapers and the railways brought success to the festival for decades. Its origins and influences are described, with performances of themes from the concerts and the Auckland Flower Show Hornpipe. It brought bands and competitors from all over Great Britain with huge prize money. The beautiful oil painting by Carmichael of the Show hangs in Auckland library. The Show changed concert-going behaviour, cementing the reputation of the area. FREE EVENT – bookings can be made by email or tel: 03000 262052.
