The communities of Ferryhill and Bishop Auckland are experiencing a significant shift in local representation as two County Durham councillors have joined Reform UK.
Joe Quinn, representing Ferryhill, and Cathy Hunt, who serves the Woodhouse Close ward in Bishop Auckland, announced their decision to join Reform UK during a rally in Houghton-le-Spring. This move brings Reform UK’s presence on the council to three members.
Nigel Farage, speaking at the rally, expressed his enthusiasm for the new additions, stating, “We started today’s conference with just one County Councillor in Durham but we have finished it with three! I warmly welcome Joe and Cathy to Reform UK. This is just the beginning for our party in the North East.”
Joe Quinn shared his thoughts on the decision, saying, “Today is the day I officially defect from the Conservative party. I did struggle with whether to change parties or not – that’s not because I didn’t believe in Reform, it’s simply because I always thought changing colours or changing party is a sign of weakness. However, on reflection, I realized that changing sides is a sign of strength.”
Cathy Hunt had recently resigned as a Conservative member to sit as an independent, following boundary changes that reshaped the Bishop Auckland ward. Her decision to join Reform UK reflects her commitment to serving the community’s best interests.
Robert Potts, representing Evenwood near Bishop Auckland, became the first Reform UK member on Durham County Council when he defected in December. His move set the stage for the recent changes, highlighting a growing trend of councillors seeking to better represent their communities through Reform UK.
The community of Ferryhill and Bishop Auckland can look forward to a new chapter in local governance, with councillors dedicated to addressing their needs and concerns.
