Ferryhill is situated approximately six miles south of Durham City, and has a population of around 11,000. Ferryhill grew rapidly in the 1900's as a mining town, although the Dean & Chapter mine officially closed in 1966 and was demolished in the early 1970's. According to an Anglo Saxon charter from 900AD, an unnamed settlement existed in the area.
