About Stanhope
Often described as the "capital of Weardale", this bustling town has much to offer the visitor. In the grounds of St Thomas' Church, overlooking the Market Place, can be seen a fossil tree thought to be 250 million years old and originally discovered near Edmund Byers, just north of Weardale.
Its name derives from the Anglo Saxon "STONY VALLEY" and it stands at the spot where Stanhope Burn meets the Wear. Nearby at Heathery Burn a collection of valuable late Bronze Age items were discovered as early evidence of human occupation. Stanhope Church dates from about 1200AD and stands on a slope above the Marketplace. Nearby is the battlemented walls of Stanhope Castle built in 1798 on the site of a medieval castle.
