About West Auckland
A neighbour of Bishop Auckland, West Auckland achieved notoriety on 24th March, 1873, when Mary Ann Cotton was hanged at Durham Jail for poisoning her son Charles at West Auckland. She is said to be responsible for 21 deaths, including her mother, three husbands, one lover and a number of children, including her own.
On a more positive note, in 1910 West Auckland Football Club was invited to take part in a competition in Italy to compete for the Soccer World Cup.
