Local Volunteers Honored with Chairman’s Medals

Our community is celebrating the remarkable contributions of local volunteers who have been awarded the prestigious Chairman’s Medals, the highest civic honor in our area.

John Adey and Jimmy Carroll

Chester-le-Street residents John Adey and Jimmy Carroll were recognized for their tireless efforts to honor those who have served in wars and conflicts. The duo spearheaded the creation of the town’s Remembrance Memorial in 2009, raising funds to establish this meaningful tribute. They also organized the annual Remembrance Parade, which has grown into a major community event, drawing over 4,500 participants each year. Jimmy, a veteran himself, brings a personal commitment to commemorating the sacrifices of service members.

Open Door Church Volunteers

Volunteers from the Open Door Church in Willington were also honored for their incredible support for vulnerable residents. During the coronavirus pandemic, they cooked and delivered meals from the church café, provided Christmas Day lunches, and gifted wrapped presents to families in need. Their efforts extend to hosting community activities, helping residents with budgeting, form-filling, and connecting them to educational and enrichment opportunities. The church’s Fun and Food holiday events have brought joy to children and supported people of all ages.

Award Ceremony
