The St. Mary’s under 16 b team have been working towards their target of £13,300 which would allow a team of 18 to compete in the 2011 Barcelona Tournament.

The players and a team of volunteers will fly out on 3rd July for the official opening of the tournament. Funding to support the trip came from Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP.

The tournament features young players from all over the world, with an opportunity to find out about the cultures of other players. They will fly back to the UK in mid-July and hope to promote the trip with a view to raising funds for future Barcelona tournaments.

Jackie Cleminson, manager, said: “I would like to thank the Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP and everyone else who have supported us in our quest to play in the Barcelona Cup Football Tournament. On behalf of the players and officials we are very grateful for the £1000 granted to our team.

“I must commend the young people on their dedication, passion and determination over the last 12 months, where in total we have raised over £14,000. A lot of work has gone into making this well deserved trip happen. It means so much to the young people so let’s hope we can bring back some silverware.”

Alan Boddy, chair of task and finish group: “This project is an excellent example of the motivation that young people have to achieve their objective.

“Their determination and initiative with regards to fundraising is to be commended. Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP are delighted to be able to support this project and wish the team every success in the forthcoming tournament.”
